Gastric Balloon
This surgery is one of the obesity treatments made of silicone or polyurethane material, which is placed in the stomach before being inflated and inflated with sterile liquid. The application is not a surgical intervention. However, depending on the type of balloon, some intragastric balloons are placed and removed by endoscopy under anesthesia.
The mechanism of action of the gastric balloon, on the other hand, takes up space in the stomach and creates a constant feeling of satiety in the patient. Thus, the patient loses weight with less food consumption at each meal.
Depending on the type, the gastric balloon stays in the stomach for 4-12 months on average. During this period, food intake to the stomach is limited with the feeling of satiety and satiety. It makes it easier for the person to comply with his diet. The patient’s diet and eating habits change. If the person continues these habits even after the balloon comes out of the stomach, he/she can maintain his/her ideal weight.

During The Surgery
During the surgery, light sedation is applied so that the patient does not feel any pain. If endoscopy and sedation are to be performed for the placement of the balloon in the stomach, a specialist anesthesiologist is also present during the application.
There is a situation that needs attention before the deflated balloon is placed in the stomach. Whether the balloon to be placed is suitable for the stomach should be checked by endoscopy. No food should be consumed for the last 6 hours before the operation.
After the balloon is placed in the stomach, the balloon is inflated to be approximately the size of an orange. It is inflated with an average of 400 -600 ml of isotonic sterile saline. It is known that the volume of an average stomach is around 1-1.5 liters. Gastric balloons take up 800 ml of space. However, how much the balloon will be inflated is decided by the doctor considering some criteria.
The color of the water was changed to blue with methylene blue. Thus, if there is a hole or leak in the balloon, your urine will turn blue. In this case, you should contact your doctor immediately to have the balloon removed. The balloon will be removed from the stomach by endoscopy.
Before The Surgery
Changing your diet and eating habits after surgery is important for healthy weight loss. Some rules to be followed along with the detailed diet program given by the dietitian are as follows:
- During this period, more protein-containing foods should be eaten. And this should become a habit.
- The intervals between meals should be close to each other.
- You can slice fruit into your yoghurt when you want too much sweet. You can add cinnamon to your milk. These stabilize your blood sugar. Therefore, your sweet cravings will decrease.
- You should make sure that the foods you eat are free of added sugar.
- You should not drink liquids during meals. You should stop consuming liquids half an hour before meals. You should wait half an hour after meals.
