Prosthetic Dentistry

It is the branch of dentistry that deals with prosthetic dental treatments. It is a treatment that is generally applied to patients who are late for treatment. This method is the process of replacing the lost teeth with various prostheses in an aesthetic appearance without disturbing the integrity of the mouth. The application aims to help people feel better aesthetically.

In addition, this treatment makes a significant contribution to oral and dental health by restoring chewing and speaking functions. Prosthetic dental treatments are applied only by “prosthodontists” who are experts in this field. Prosthodontists carry out the job of filling the empty spaces in case of loss of all or part of the teeth for different reasons. Tooth loss, which disturbs people enough to isolate them from social life, can be replaced with prosthetic dental treatments.

What Are The Prostheses Used In Prosthetic Dentistry?

In this treatment, two basic methods are generally applied, namely “movable prosthesis” and “fixed prosthesis”. Of these, the removable prosthesis is also divided into 2 subgroups.

These;

  • Zirconium Supported Prostheses: These prostheses are used more especially in the anterior areas that are aesthetically important. This method is also used in smile design applications. It is a successful type of prosthesis that is used not only aesthetically but also functionally.
  • Metal Supported Prostheses: It is a model that is more applied to the teeth on the back. Since it does not give an aesthetic appearance, it is not preferred for front teeth. Rather, it provides the restoration of tooth form instead of decayed, damaged teeth. In this application, metals made of nickel or gold are used.

Fixed prosthesis, which is another prosthesis application, is also divided into 2 groups in itself. These prostheses are;

  • Total (full tooth) dentures: It is known as dentures among the people. These prostheses are applied in cases where all the teeth are missing. Total prostheses applied separately to the lower and upper jaws are used by making use of the existing bone tissue, if any. However, the vast majority of patients benefit from denture adhesive products sold in pharmacies.
  • Partial dentures: These dentures are a type of prosthesis applied to patients who have lost some of their teeth and divided into 2 groups. When we look at these prostheses; “Skeleton-part” dentures are prostheses that are applied by attaching a crochet (hook) with the help of existing teeth and tissues in the mouth. The disadvantage of the application is that it is aesthetically disturbing due to the fact that the crochet is visible. The other is; They are “precision-retained partial” prostheses. Since these prostheses are applied with hooks that are attached to the tooth tissue, they do not cause discomfort to the person in terms of appearance.
